Grades 5–8+ | 6-Week Lab | Virtual + In-Person Studio Cohorts
Foundations Lab teaches students the skills behind successful independent work: how to learn, how to ask better questions, how to use available resources, how to break down challenges, and how to keep going when something feels hard.
Before students can debate better, pitch better, write better, research better, or lead better, they need to know how to start, think through challenges, and keep moving when the path is unclear.
This is not tutoring. This is a toolkit class.
Foundations Lab is designed for students who:
have strong ideas but struggle to know where to begin
feel overwhelmed by large assignments or projects
wait for adults to tell them the next step
struggle to ask questions or advocate for help
want to become more independent learners
are preparing for more advanced academic, leadership, or project-based opportunities
Foundations Lab is strongly recommended for students preparing for more advanced and project-based Edge Up programs, including:
Intermediate Debate — students learn how to research topics, organize arguments, prepare independently, and use feedback to improve
Competitive Debate — students build the independent preparation habits needed for evidence, case development, and tournament readiness
Global Diplomats Academy — students develop the research, writing, preparation, and self-management skills needed for diplomacy and committee work
MS CEO Studio / MS CEO+ — students strengthen the project management, research, planning, and problem-solving habits needed to build ideas independently
Venture Lab — Venture Lab includes Foundations Lab as its required first phase. Students enrolled in Venture Lab do not need to register separately for Foundations Lab.
Students do not need to be struggling to benefit from Foundations Lab. High-achieving students also need tools for managing complexity, ambiguity, feedback, and long-term projects.
Families may choose the format that best fits their child’s learning style and schedule. Both cohorts follow the same curriculum, build the same Edge Up Toolkit, and develop the same core learning habits.

want to continue into virtual programs like Venture Lab
